But maybe there should be a law against after-hours fielding of bosses’ emails? “It would be impossible to enforce,” says Leeds-based life coach Melanie Allen. “But companies should think about productivity. Is this incessant checking of emails and social media by their employees adding to productivity or just pointless stress?”

Just say no If you’re available 24/7 to your boss’s – with all due respect – increasingly loopy and unremitting demands, and you’re the kind of person who as a result gets overloaded, try harnessing the power of no. Allen advises: “If you tend to say yes without thinking when you’re asked to do something extra, stall. Don’t answer straight away. Say you’ll get back to the person asking, then use that time to think clearly about whether to say yes or no. If you want to say yes, fine. But if you want to say no, say no and keep saying it. Don’t justify your actions or give excuses. There’s no need to be nasty or rude.” The Mental Health Foundation recommends that when work demands are too high, you must speak up. Your role model here might well be Eric Cantona: in the Ken Loach film Looking for Eric, he instructs a dithering Englishman on the power of saying no. Or rather “non”.
  3. The injunction to put work away for the day sounds fine, but hold on. It’s surely not as simple as that. As you leave work, you realise you haven’t done something as well as you could. You turn on your heel and go back to do it right. Is that so very wrong? “Well,” says Allen, “some people find it very hard to let things go. I call it ‘good enough versus fabulous’. Sometimes, if you’re overworked, you need to explicitly tell yourself that what you’ve done may not be perfect, but it is good enough.” She cites the example of a woman who goes back to full-time work and finds that her partner doesn’t do the laundry as well as she used to; he just piles mangled T-shirts with their sleeves still inside out on the radiators. “But she has to let that go because the alternative is she takes on more work when she’s already stressed out. What I’m saying is, don’t put extra pressure on yourself when you don’t need to – at work or at home.” As Netmums tells working mothers in its top 10 tips for work-life balance: “Give yourself a break. It doesn’t matter if your home’s not immaculate and your children aren’t fed super-nutritious, cooked-from-scratch food every day.”
  4. “You really need to find your own work-life balance, probably with the help of others,” says Allen. “The important thing is to ignore the shoulds – the shoulds that comes from other people or from you internalising others’ mindsets. You have to rely on your own intuition.” We are witnessing a generational shift in our attitudes to work. Millennials (those born after 1980) are more likely than their elders to blur the lines between work and home. Some 81% of them think they should set their own work patterns. For some, that might involve virtual meetings (by Skype, for example) rather than real ones, the opportunity to work from home when they want to and, ideally, a no-recrimination clause in their contract that would be activated when they tell their boss to shove it when she asks them to work next Sunday. Well, we can all dream. What’s workable is, of course, another matter.
  5. Nobody likes having a sore back. Missed work and escalating health care costs due to back pain are a huge concern for both employees and employers.
 Can cost a business thousands of pounds over the years and will increase dependant on the quality of staff who are ill.

Thankfully, a recently published study found that a workplace yoga practice can not only decrease discomfort for those with chronic back pain but also reduce employee sick days. Research also suggests that a workplace yoga practice can further improve our professional lives by increasing creativity, productivity, and problem-solving.

Conducted on employees of the UK’s National Health Service (NHS), the study split 150 participants into two groups: yoga and education. The yoga group participated in an hour-long class once a week for eight weeks. They received a DVD and asana poster and were encouraged to practice at home for 10 minutes a day for six months. The second group received two pamphlets on back pain management and workplace stress reduction.

If you’ve practiced yoga, you won’t be surprised to learn that after these eight weeks, those who suffered from chronic back pain in the yoga group experienced less pain than those in the education group. These employees also sought out medical attention related to back pain half as often throughout the six-month study. Furthermore, the participants who devoted time to practice outside of these weekly sessions benefited more than those who did not. After six months, employees who practiced at home for at least 60 minutes each week doubled their reduction in pain and reported decreased stress—imagine what 60 minutes per day could do for you!

A gentle yoga practice consisting of a few easy backbends would be very similar to what was practiced in the study. YogaBasics also has a Backside Blues pose sequence that is designed to strengthen the back, prevent injury, and to alleviate mild back pain.

Apart from the obvious physical benefits of practicing yoga at work (we all know that our bodies are not meant to sit and look at a screen all day!), research indicates that practicing yoga facilitates creativity since yoga can lead to a slowing of the often-overpowering rational mind. This allows the subconscious mind to shine through, which strengthens both problem-solving abilities and creative capacity.

Yoga encourages us to be fully present, which allows us to experience flashes of lucidity, inspiration, and motivation. If that doesn’t happen instantly, no need to fret. At the least, stepping back from the workplace or personal drama leads to a realization that life is bigger than our current difficulties, emotional states or tasks at hand—and this makes our challenges easier to approach. When fully embraced, yoga and meditation can provide a complete retreat from past grief, future worries, and daily struggles.

Grilled Salmon

Makes: 6 servings

Serving Size: 1 ounce cooked salmon, 2/3 of an egg, 1 cup greens, about 3/4 cup vegetables, and about 1-1/2 tablespoons vinaigrette

Carb Grams Per Serving: 12


  • 2 4 – 5 – ounces fresh or frozen skinless salmon fillets
  • 8 tiny new potatoes
  • 8 ounces fresh green beans, trimmed
  • 1/4 teaspoon lemon-pepper seasoning
  • Nonstick cooking spray
  • 6 cups torn mixed salad greens
  • 8 grape tomatoes or cherry tomatoes, halved
  • 1/2 cup snipped fresh chives
  • 4 hard-cooked eggs, cut into wedges
  • 1/4 cup nicoise olives, pitted, and/or other pitted olives
  • 1 recipe Lemon Vinaigrette


  • Thaw salmon, if frozen. Rinse salmon; pat dry with paper towels. Set aside. Peel a strip around the center of each potato. In a covered large saucepan, cook potatoes in enough lightly salted boiling water to cover for 10 minutes. Add green beans. Return to boiling; reduce heat. Cover and simmer about 5 minutes more or until potatoes and beans are tender. Drain. Rinse with cold water to cool quickly; drain again. Set aside.
  • Meanwhile, measure the thickness of salmon fillets. Sprinkle salmon with lemon-pepper seasoning. Lightly coat both sides of salmon fillets with cooking spray.
  • For a charcoal grill, place salmon fillets on the rack of an uncovered grill directly over medium coals. Grill for 4 to 6 minutes per 1/2-inch thickness or until fish flakes easily when tested with a fork, turning once halfway through grilling if fish is over 3/4 inch thick. (For a gas grill, preheat grill. Reduce heat to medium. Place salmon fillets on grill rack over heat. Cover and grill as above.) Cut salmon into serving-size pieces.
  • Line six plates with salad greens. Arrange salmon, potatoes, green beans, tomatoes, chives, eggs, and olives on greens. Drizzle with Lemon Vinaigrette.

Lemon Vinaigrette


  • 1/2 teaspoon finely shredded lemon peel
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper


  • In a screw-top jar, combine lemon peel, lemon juice, olive oil, garlic, salt, and pepper. Cover and shake well.
