The Benefits of Weight Loss for Type 2 Diabetes

The Benefits of Weight Loss for Type 2 Diabetes: Prevent or Delay Complications and Other Health Risks
Need motivation to lose weight? These important facts and figures may tip the scale in your favor when preventing diabetes complications and other health problems.

Why Weight Matters

For people who carry extra pounds, weight loss promises a host of health improvements. Trimming just 10-20 pounds can pay huge dividends in managing type 2 diabetes and other ailments — and save you money on health care expenses.

Obesity causes a long list of problems — type 2 diabetes is only one of them. “Excess weight is at the root of more than 50 medical problems,” says Louis Aronne, M.D., clinical professor of metabolic research at Weill-Cornell Medical College in New York City.

Fat in the Fire

Central obesity — the accumulation of fat, or adipose tissue, around the abdomen and liver — is the master switch that sets off many obesity-related health problems, Aronne says. This fat buildup can give some peoples’ bodies an apple-shape appearance.

Excess weight activates white blood cells that trigger inflammation throughout the body. Inflammation in turn causes fat cells to expand and put out larger-than-normal amounts of some hormones, such as insulin. This overflow of insulin turns off the spigot of other hormones involved in blood sugar control. There’s also declining output of adiponectin, a hormone made in the adipose tissue that prevents type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

The changes that occur with inflammation and insulin resistance are at the core of the many weight-related problems. “These changes don’t show up overnight; they’re years in the making and surprisingly also are involved with infertility, depression, and generally decreased energy,” says Ronald Tamler, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Mount Sinai Diabetes Center in New York City.

Weight Loss

Modest is Mighty

When excess weight is lost, many conditions show improvement. “The benefits — from lower glucose to having healthier skin — seem endless,” says Beth DeLauder, 46, of Stafford, Virginia, who has type 2 diabetes.

“I didn’t know I felt so bad. I was clueless about the many ways my extra baggage (pounds) was impacting my health.”

Weight loss need not be drastic. “Modest weight loss, 5-7 percent from starting weight, has what’s called ‘curious power’ to lower glucose, because it’s powerful beyond what would be expected,” says Donna Ryan, M.D., professor emeritus at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and past president of The Obesity Society.

Best Time for Weight Loss

The sooner you trim down after learning you have type 2 diabetes, the better. You’ll salvage more of your existing insulin-making beta cells. Losing weight can rack up even more health benefits for people who have prediabetes or risk factors for developing type 2 because they may have less insulin resistance and more beta cells.

Weight loss soon after type 2 diagnosis may minimize the need for blood glucose-lowering medicines for a few years.

If you’ve lived with type 2 diabetes for a while and haven’t lost weight, move forward now. Most people will experience at least a few benefits regardless of the number of pounds lost or how long they’ve had diabetes, Aronne says.

Weight Loss

The Biggest Wins

“From the standpoint of glucose control, shedding a few pounds by reducing calories and burning more with exercise gives you the biggest bang for your efforts,” Ryan says. Even people working to maintain their weight often experience continued improvement in glucose control, she says.

When it comes to lowering blood pressure and triglycerides and increasing HDL (good) cholesterol, modest weight loss provides a big assist, especially when achieved with regular physical activity. Shedding a few pounds can also improve depression, sleep apnea, and arthritis in the knees and hips.

Some conditions require greater weight loss to improve. Correcting LDL (bad) cholesterol requires shedding more pounds and typically a statin medication. “When it comes to the infertility issues in men and women, more than modest weight loss is needed — particularly in men — but any little bit helps,” Tamler says.

Try and Try Again

Even if you don’t lose weight or you regain some, preventing further weight gain is a plus. “The common trajectory of weight gain today is 2-4 pounds a year from a mere 50-100 extra calories a day,” Ryan says. “People and their providers need to be aware that weight regain, at least a few pounds, will happen, but renewed attempts at weight loss can succeed.”

Type 2 diabetes is progressive. Over time the ability to make insulin dwindles. Weight loss several years into having diabetes might help you improve blood sugar control or eliminate a blood glucose-lowering medicine. No matter when weight loss occurs, Aronne says, it’s always easier to manage your diabetes at a lower weight.

3 Ways to Start on the Road to Weight Loss

Ready to start losing weight now? Dr. Ryan suggests these action steps:

• Talk to your health care provider about whether losing a few pounds will improve your glucose control and offer other health benefits.

• Review your blood glucose-lowering medications with your provider: Are they foiling your efforts to lose pounds because they are making you hungry and/or causing hypoglycemia? Other glucose-lowering medicines may help you with weight loss while also lowering your blood sugar.

• Ask for a referral to a reliable and successful weight management program. Support and education are crucial for weight loss and maintenance.

The best foods for diabetes

apples

The best foods for diabetes are most often whole foods that are not processed, such as fruits and vegetables. Including these extra-healthy power foods in your diet will help you meet your nutritional needs as well as lower your risk of diabetes complications such as heart disease. Of course, the foods on this list shouldn’t be the only foods you eat, but incorporating some or all into your diabetes meal plan will help improve your overall health.

Apples

An apple a day keeps the doctor away — specifically the cardiologist. A 2012 study at Ohio State University published in the Journal of Functional Foods found that eating just one apple a day for four weeks lowered LDL (bad) cholesterol by 40 percent. The professor leading the study explained that not all antioxidants are created equal, and that a particular type of antioxidant in apples had a profound effect on lowering LDLs, a contributor to heart disease. The study was funded in part by a grant from the U.S. Apple Association, among other supporters.

This crunchy fruit also appears to offer protection against diabetes. The Harvard School of Public Health examined the diets of 200,000 people and found that those who reported eating five or more apples a week had a 23 percent lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared with subjects who did not eat any apples.

More good news: A medium-size apple contains 3 grams of fiber, which includes both soluble and insoluble fiber. How ’bout them apples?

Do remember, however, that one small apple has about 15 grams of carb. Some of the large apples in the grocery store are equivalent to two servings of fruit.

Diabetes and Yoga

Yoga is becoming increasingly popular in the UK
[divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=””]

An increasing number of people with diabetes mellitus are turning to yoga in an effort to keep their condition under control and improve overall quality of life.

It is well known that regular practice of yoga can help reduce levels of stress, enhance mobility, lower blood pressure and improve overall wellbeing.

It is these benefits that many health experts believe can improve diabetes management and protect against other related medical conditions such as heart disease.

What is yoga?

Yoga is a series of mental, physical and spiritual disciplines that originated in ancient India over 5,000 years ago.

The practice of yoga helps to co-ordinate the breath, mind and body to promote relaxation, develop breath awareness and provide a sense of inner peace.

It involves various body postures and movements (known as asanas), breathing techniques and meditation, which are all designed to promote physical comfort and mental composure.

There are several forms of yoga, but in the west the most widely taught form is Hatha Yoga.

Benefits of yoga

Most, if not all, people who undergo regular yoga training experience improvements in their mental and physical health.

These benefits can include:

  • Better sleep
  • Reduced anxiety and depression
  • Enhanced feelings of well-being
  • Relief from chronic illnesses
  • Improved digestion, circulation, and immunity
  • Improved posture, flexibility and strength
  • Enhanced concentration and energy levels
  • Enhanced function and efficiency of respiratory, neurological and endocrine organs

An open letter to the NHS by Dr.Matt Joslin

Open letter

Dear NHS,

When I write to the National Health Service, really I am appealing to you as its users. But you users are also the care providers, administrators, managers and policy shapers.

In this country our health service is part of the lifeblood of society. I am proud to be part of that despite the current challenges facing us.

So many of the news stories about the NHS currently sadden me. Services are cut back, patients are let down by the system, individual health care workers are overwhelmed and stretched to breaking point. The health of the nation raises cause for concern and we reflect on the trend of living longer but with doubt over the quality of that life in our more senior years. There are many ways that we as a society and providers of health care could address these problems and I want to bring Yoga to the table as an intervention on an individual and public health level that offers positive and sustainable improvements to health across the board. Before scepticism prevents you from reading further, please consider the following.

On a personal level I came across yoga 15 years ago to help me with back pain. My terrible posture and lack of exercise due to most of my week being spent sat at a desk was taking its toll. Subsequent to this I suffered a bout of depression, which nearly resulted in my leaving the medical profession. Unexpectedly, I found that rather than the well-pushed interventions of talking therapies and medication, it was my yoga practice that sustained me and helped me get back on track. As time goes by the many facets of yoga practice become more apparent to me. It is so much more than just exercise and now, with confidence from personal experience I recommend yoga to my patients.

Every day in my job as a GP I think of the potential of Yoga. Yoga could have a positive impact on almost every health related situation that comes into my consulting room. It comes up in discussions about weight loss, anxiety, back pain and depression, pregnancy, cancer, cardiovascular health and ageing. I could go on. The more I consider the role yoga has for an individual person coping with a particular health concern, the more I see the potential for Yoga to become a public health intervention that society could opt for to bolster the health of the nation. From a public health perspective, if a Think Tank was trying to devise an intervention that had potential to improve physical and mental health parameters across all age ranges with great accessibility and appeal, with little outlay for the individual in set up costs, I challenge you to find a better intervention than Yoga.

I want to see whether there is a way to marry the amazing healing sustaining practice that is Yoga with the services offered by the NHS. The NHS already sends people to the gym and to swimming pools. Find me a physiotherapist who doesn’t think yoga is a good idea. It is time yoga became the default option to get people moving, improve strength, flexibility and posture and while you’re at it, to bring a helping of mindfulness to promote mental health.

This idea has credibility is gaining momentum. Just last autumn The Mindfulness All-Party Parliamentary Group reported on the evidence and best practice of mindfulness. It plans to develop policy recommendations for Government with respect to applications in health, education, the workplace and the criminal justice system. Mindfulness is an integral part of Yoga, which has the potential to offer yet more benefits in those domains than just mindfulness alone.

Yoga is not new to the UK. Manchester in particular has very strong links to the yoga tradition with international expertise. The yoga infrastructure here grows year on year. Should the users of the NHS wish it, we can capitalise on this base of expertise and offer it as tool to improve health care. Essentially I am asking you to consider offering Yoga on prescription.

GPs have been put centre stage in the process of commissioning services. What strikes me is that in this process we should be representing the needs and wishes of the community when commissioning a service. This is a unique opportunity for you, as consumers of the NHS to have a voice and help shape a service if you want to.

Share this letter via any medium you choose. Open up the debate. Do you see a role for yoga in your health care? Do you have questions or reservations? If you show your interest and get a conversation going, we can encourage the NHS to drive this forward. I truly believe in this idea. I hope you see its potential too.

Yours Sincerely

Dr Matt Joslin
